"Fun-To-Know: Poker Made Simple!"

Possibly the simplest, yet approachable, tutorial DVD teaching poker to the absolute beginner.

Jason Roth

It's time for a little confession: I never understood how to play poker at all, despite knowing a few of the terms used. To someone who has launched and founded the casino gaming website special GAMINGSOTROS, yes, that's an embarrassment to the entire community. Looking to change that, I sought nothing further than banking in on a DVD like this to see if I can catch up immediately. What a difference less than an hour makes.

Teaching the ins and outs of poker is expert Jason Roth, who is the host and the main man teaching everything about the game from the basics, and the terms/phrases used, up there with intermediate techniques in playing the game. Right away, you may find his vocal delivery and style seem like a perfect choice of someone you can impersonate. While that may be true, Jason does a great job elaborating everything about what the game is all about, and being that this is poker, of course he'll sport a serious face. You guessed it: He tells you the key reason for busting that cold, blank gaze during the gameplay famously known as the "poker face" on this presentation and why.

The DVD features the simple game of Poker, Seven Card Stud and Texas Hold 'Em. Granted, I would have loved to see Pai Gow Poker but this is good enough especially for the clear-cut beginner. The game is also thoroughly explained when played with other opponents, what decision/choice to make, the allowable bets, 'folding,' and what it takes to win the 'pot.' For starters, playing poker means you play against other players and not against the House. The advantage of poker is playing with other people whose luck may not be as hot compared to yours, making you the stronger player to clean slate. It's no wonder there are grocery lists of professional poker players who have mastered the game and the art of bluffing.

The video is presented and digitized in a full screen (4:3) format—interlaced—with an MPEG-2 (mpgv) at a 29.97 frame rate. For the audio, it is digitized in stereo via A52 Audio (ac3) over a sample rate of 48000 Hz with 32 bits per sample.

Although this is the first DVD in the Fun-To-Know series to be review here, it is with great honor that this tutorial teaching poker was excellent and well presented that anyone can understand. Depending on the person learning it, you may have to replay the entire DVD, or do some rewinding, to catch up on some terms and tips you may have missed. Perhaps that was the reason why this DVD was so simply produced and made, without all the advertisements, "easter eggs" and any features that may be distracting to the learner. As for the dealer/teacher Jason Roth, he did a fantastic job teaching about the simple game of Poker, Seven Card Stud and Texas Hold 'Em to give the beginning player a huge, knowledgeable stretch to get them up to par to casino gaming today.

I read one reviewer of this DVD saying the tutorial is too simple. That's because this is targeted to the layperson with no experience or prior knowledge of the game, hence the DVD title "Poker Made Simple." If you're looking for advanced tips and tutorials, you'd look to get suggestions from other professionals via DVD, online video-sharing websites or books.

No question that DVDs like these come cheap, usually at the cost of pocket change or the average price of lunch, but just because it's low in price doesn't mean it's terrible. Yeah, this is a DVD that's 15 years old! However, I wanted to extend my learning for casino gaming and Poker was the closest thing to me, and therefore, I found this DVD. Hey, better late than never!

With that being said, I feel it's never too late to learn something new. If you're an eager learner for casino gaming, there's a reason that sports networks have broadcasted competitions featuring poker. Get a grip of the game and you only have to worry about the luck of the cards and outwitting your opponents.

You're looking at an excellent DVD we recommend!
