"Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes" by Scott Cawthon & Kira Breed-Wrisley
One of the classic horror books based off of the popular video game Five Nights at Freddy's!
Some authors are naturally talented at telling stories. With this release inspired by the popular video game series similarly titled, Five Nights at Freddy's will stand as one of the most thrilling series we have ever came across. Thanks to YouTubers whose video gameplay made a great advertisement for this game, along with the underlying story behind it, makes this the obvious choice in reading more on what it's all about. Due to all the fan theories emanating from the video game series itself, given that such underlying stories fascinated us more than the actual game itself, this first book in the trilogy couldn't be a more obvious choice to venture into the story and what led to such happenings (if you've played or seen the game and what it's about, then you'd realize why questions and curiosities about these come up).
The book starts off strong with a scary scene in confrontation with an animatronic. Think about it: When you have an antagonist that's a robotic as violent as a human being, you better know how to run and hide. These machines can't be taken down the same way a human criminal nor a vicious animal can. After that stunner, the scene drifts in a "to be continued," kind of way and the real story begins. The reader learns what's behind all this, the main character Charlie and her relation with fellow classmates and all the thoughts, doubts and curiosities that plagued her friends' minds. You learn about the haunted and abandoned pizzeria named Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria and why that place remains haunted in relation to the doubts these teenagers have been questioning. Even more scary, the reader, albeit gradually, finds out why such a place that attracted young, happy children could look so desolate and gruesome years after its opening. Like you'd expect from any other horror book, or movie, these young adults want to know what's going on at the pizzeria and how it looks/looked like after all the years that have passed. Along the way, judging from Charlie and her friends' have had during their ordeal, it felt like they all kept giving each other silent yet awkward looks; They all knew what happened, and the question remains to who did it and are they still around. It's as almost if one of them should report to authorities to investigate, but you, the reader, will have to find out.
You also learn about Charlie's backstory and the relationship she had with her father. Seeing that her father ran Freddy's pizzeria may make you think twice, but mysteries still float even after we finished reading this book, about his underlying reason(s) and philosophy wanting to open a restaurant (some of these points were mentioned briefly, but our own questions still lurk wondering about more...if only this book was based on a true story). While this story unfolds, you get used to the bonding that Charlie has with John as they both grew up together only to reunite, spend time together, exploring on their own and finding various clues that helped connect the situations, past and present, trying to decipher the culprits as to why and who was responsible for all that went on. What's so scary about wanting to find out what happened? You may want to hold that thought as you read through the book.
To hold the suspense and horror, you'll find that this book does not include an Index nor does it include a Table of Contents. That means you, the reader, are going to read page by page to find out all that's going on. Of course, some readers will go ahead and turn pages to see for themselves, but doing that ruins the fun with what this story is trynig to tell. Other than that, not including such feature isn't much a concern, in terms of review, because diving in to the story without seeing any signs of when the chapter is done. We find that to be a great move.
If you've read horror or graphic novels before, you may find this book to be tame in comparison. Because we've happily been reading and reviewing nonfiction books for more than 10 years and counting, we couldn't be any more pleased with this; It gave us the chills, goosebumps and some "jumpscares," if you will, and loved the story-telling overall. We went as far as to re-read those "jumpscares," and found them to be one of the biggest treats ever in this book. Makes us wish it was Halloween already. Besides that, we were amazed—the writing style, how descriptive the scenes and situations were, and how cinematic it comes off. We could not find one, single bad about this book; This book was told excellently to the point where we're nervous about reading anything else that wasn't written by authors Cawthon and Breed-Wrisley. As mentioned earlier, there were parts of the book we'd re-read just for the fun of it because it was creepy yet enjoyable. This is possibly one of the best books we've read and we're not even halfway through this 2025 year.
Whether you're a fan of the video game series or the movie, which we haven't watched yet, check out this book! It's so much fun, and we can't wait to read more books following it. This book deserves a medal!
