"Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997"
Truly a DVD set for the big "Batman" collector/fan.
👤 Kris Caballero 📅 Mar 24, 2018 🗨 📂 DVD Reviews
Batman.
That's all you have to say, and you'll trigger explosive attention from everyone knowing that that's the man who can fend off the wrongdoers from wrecking havoc. Knowing he fights crime, he also settles the score in avenging his parents' death, which he witnessed as a kid. He goes by the name of Bruce Wayne, and as the Moon rises up, he gets to work eradicating crime everywhere suiting up to his dark identity: Batman.
Derived from the original comics from the mastermind himself Bob Kane, Batman is a comic book character who became a worldwide hit faster than light speed. Along with the TV series, Batman & Robin, including their very own movie based off the show, there isn't anything more or new about Batman that people don't already know about, or should bother to learn. Batman is so ubiquitous in pop culture, he's almost a requirement to know and learn about in our lives. Even if you're not a fan of the franchise, and/or if you've never seen any of these films, you at least know who he is and what he's briefly about—a superhero whom many of us can relate, retaliating against a cruel entity that costed the lives of loved ones, while fighting off injustice and corruption spread by gangs summoned by an evil leader. Other than that, Batman will forever live on in American film history, recognized as one of the most iconic heroes that ever graced the stage. Only thing to talk about Batman is the actor who plays him.
This DVD set includes the four-film anthology that reminded us how much we admire the manly superhero, from 1989 to 1997. Each DVD case packs two discs: one for the feature film, the second for the special features never-before-seen footage and exclusive interviews. That's eight DVDs packed in this amazing collection that'll give you a reason to cozy up at home on Friday nights and enjoy an action-packed marathon. (The contents for all DVDs in this package are written on the Profile table above this page. Now you know why we provide the profiles first thing before the review.)
Let's start by saying this: personally, I have only seen the first Batman film with Michael Keaton previously and have not watched the other three, until now.
Batman:
Out of all the four films, it's no doubt in my mind that Mr. Michael Keaton portrays the best Bruce Wayne/Batman. I always envisioned Bruce Wayne as someone "who's busy" but never can be able to property explain what it is he does. While he is able to communicate with others, Bruce Wayne is also mysteriously seeking opportunities where he can settle the score. All this while keeping an eye on a beautiful woman who's eager to know the man behind the bat mask. Keaton, to me, executed this perfectly and I truly enjoyed his role acting as the main character. Jack Nicholson, as Jack Napier/Joker, was truly remarkable. His sinister vocals and the evil prancing to destroy anyone and anything in his path was done so well, it was gripping. I really have no critiques to say about Nicholson's acting as The Joker because it, too, was done perfectly. Other cast members, like Kim Basinger and Robert Wuhl, were all absolutely remarkable. Granted, it's the first movie of Batman but it was so good, you can't help it.
Bottom line: Revenge is sweet.
Batman Returns:
Keaton is back as Batman, but now dealing with a new villian in Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, played by Danny DeVito. Oh, and it gets more interesting as Batman has another villain to deal with: Selina Kyle/Catwoman played by Michelle Pfeiffer. This is where the sassy, sexy female trying to seduce Batman gets a twist when Selina realizes her hard work and suggestions isn't fully recognized, being stuck in the reality of a business world ran by men. To all women out there: wouldn't you want to show that you're capable of something? Of course! The 'cat calling' of Catwoman eventually pairs up with the Penguin to deter Batman's plans. As for the Penguin, Danny DeVito acted out the character consistently without losing energy. I say so because I find keeping in Penguin's character difficult; That's a complex chracter to act out but DeVito did a great job. Overall, it's a fresh new story that looks perfect to watch during the holidays, due to the snowy environment presenting the Penguin, despite this film being a bit more intense compared to the first one.
Bottom line: You can't always get what you want, at least not in a profusely corrupt way.
Batman Forever:
Suddenly, the film took an enormous turn hiring Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and the film, previously directed by Tim Burton, is now directed by Joel Schumacher. It's good to be consistent with the actors portraying the characters but that didn't seem to be the case. I could imagine the jaws dropping when a new actor and a new director came in for the new Batman film. Along with that, on the villain's side, you have Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent/Two-Face and the popular comedian Jim Carrey as Ed Nygma/Riddler. These villains are crazy smart and Batman can only do so much, but due to Two-Face's plan killing off the family of circus performers, one stood out and persistently tries to partner with Batman to help fight off the bad guys: Dick Grayson/Robin played by Chris O'Donnell. This is the film where you briefly learn about how Robin came to be, and how he wanted to be by Batman's side, despite his uneven combating as he sometimes falls trap in unsuspecting situations. The woman to seduce Batman is Dr. Chase Meridian played by Nicole Kidman.
I find this to be the most action-packed, especially with the crazy humor and pace of Carrey's portrayal of Riddler. Maybe it's just me but Carrey acts like how he normally does compared to his other popular films in the nineties: slapstick, in-your-face, damn-you-dammit, hysterical and straight-up hilarity. While he was able to stay in character of the Riddler, often times, I see the knee-slapping Jim Carrey I know from his stand-up comedies and his other films. This may be bothersome to hardcore Batman fans but what more can you say about Jim Carrey? He's just hilarious, and his usages of (in)famous quotes in this movie make you forget you're watching Batman, like you're watching another film starring Jim Carrey. While it is forgivable, it took an off-road turn in complying with the character of Ed Nygma/Riddler. As for Tommy Lee Jones, he did enough of a modest job as Two-Face but I'd like to have seen more of his antics. You have two huge movie stars together acting as villains so the balance was quite tough on this one. Still, I wanted to see Two-Face do much more destruction.
For Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne/Batman? I thought he came off a little flat. His demeanor and voice seems to be best fitted for Clark Kent/Superman, and I don't know anyone who's ever made such a critique. I find Batman to be serious with a firm, hard jaw and a cold, mysterious gaze. Keaton pulled this off nicely, but I found Kilmer to be a little complacent yet neutral. Some folks may beg to differ but the fact that Kilmer turned down an opportunity to play Batman again for the next film is beyond me. I mean, yeah, I would've given him another shot anyway, but it could've been a bit stronger with Batman's seriousness. Oh, and the fact that he grinned on the film WHILE in suit of Batman disappointed me. They should've rewritten that scene. For Chris O'Donnell as Dick Grayson/Robin, I have nothing bad to say about his acting. I envisioned Robin to be the one who wants to help but eager to rebel in order to get what he wants. Besides that, he did fantastic and I enjoyed his role.
Definitely, a top-heavy film after the departure of Keaton so I can understand being under lots of pressure to make this as consistent as possible from the previous two films. I still got sour of the fact that Batman smiled after his little nightstand with Ms. Meridian. That wasn't good.
Bottom line: Hunger for power and control, and you suffer the misery it causes.
Batman & Robin:
The reactions you get when you mention this film is incredible, yet not suprising at times. I can understand why: George Clooney as Bruce Wayne/Batman. I'll just go and say it: a 'playboy' and an ass-kicking superhero don't mix. Mr. Clooney was too clean-cut and "pretty" to even pass off as a hero who has no shame in surviving a battle with scars in his face, blood dripping off his knuckles and bruises on his body. Don't get me wrong, Clooney is rugged and manly when he wants to be, but he came off flat in this film. That scene when his character and Dick Grayson, played by Chris O'Donnell, were arguing about Poison Ivy like it was a teen romance movie was the most ridiculous thing I ever saw. I don't think that that could have been re-written but it would've been better to edit that scene out. Two superheroes don't need to argue about a girl and who she liked better; There's trouble in the city and a job needs to be done.
The addition of Barbara Wilson/Bat Girl played by Alicia Silverstone was interesting, though I feel many fans may have mixed reactions to this. The movie gave space to have viewers get to know her a little bit better due to her relation to Alfred Pennyworth—her uncle. I'm so used to Silverstone from her hit film Clueless, but her innocent nature and youth makes her a great addition to "Bat Team." While it's easy to say it wasn't necessary, her character served as the one who was able to eradicate Poison Ivy, eventually putting her back in her place with this line:
"Using feminine wiles to get what you want? Trading on your looks? Read a book, sister. That passive-aggressive number went out long ago. Chicks like you give women a bad name."
— Barbara Wilson (Bat Girl)
Now that's hot.
Speaking of Poison Ivy, played by the wonderful Uma Thurman, I don't think I could've recommended a better actress. Her looks are versatile enough to have her pass off as a nerdy girl to an irresistible vixen whom men want to have a shot at (something some girls fantasize about growing up). The muscle man Arnold Schwarzenegger as Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze was also done very well. Like Jim Carrey, I can't see Schwarzenegger protraying as anyone else but The Terminator, but unlike Carrey, he pulled off that popular cinematic persona and reeled me in with his villainous character.
Bottom line: Looks matter but looks change. Your partner in crime may be your worst enemy.
Overall, this is an amazing package for the Batman fan, and even those wanting to dive into the DC superhero franchise. Oh, and Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth will always be the perfect man for that role. He's admirable and is a very likeable character.
About the video quality. This is widescreen, standard definition, video but the quality was nicely remastered from the original film. Being that this film specialized in low-light shooting, it looks really good as there were, if not extremely minimal, pixelated dark spots (crushed blacks) on the video. New Wave Entertainment DVD did a fantastic job perfectly remastering these films on DVD. Now the DVDs featuring the movies themselves are in widescreen, 16:9, which should perfectly fit your widescreen TV/computer monitor. The only ones that aren't widescreen are most of the Special Features on the second DVD. This is understandable but it may tick off some fans. I say understandable since the video clips seem to have been captured from VHS tapes, cleaned up a little, then placed directly on DVD. Shadows of the Bat looks like a small series that was originally produced for TV. The rest are exclusive interviews, rare clips and illustrations, deleted scenes and music videos. Once again, the Special Features aren't all in widescreen, as most are in standard format, 4:3, and some clips are in letterboxed format.
For the audio, it's crystal clear and it's a beautiful thing being that most of the actors speak in low-toned voices. You do get audio options besides the usual stereo such as Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound! This means you can take advantage of getting that theater-quality audio at the comfort of your own home, enjoying the realistic beauty of how crisp the sound of the films are.
For the video, it was digitized in MPGV 720x480 (widescreen) decoded with the Planar 4:2:0 YUV video color space format. For the audio, it was digitized with A52 Audio also known as AC3.
Rummaging through the bonus features, I noticed an interesting clip featuring an interview with director Joel Schumacher, on the DVD Special Features for Batman & Robin. At a specific part of the interview, he actually apologized for the movie. Watch for yourself:
I don't know about anyone here, but apology accepted. Schumacher probably shouldn't have apologized anyway, but imagining the reactions of fans during the anticipation for this movie's release back in 1997 must have been that terrible—enough to get a director to say he's sorry. While the movie, Batman & Robin, according to writers and producers was initially targeted toward children and to glamorize gadgets to be re-produced as consumer collectibles, Mr. Schumacher gave it his best shot, and that's what he did.
The more you know, huh? This has got to be one of the most action-packed DVD set available for the DC Comic/Batman fan. There is also a Blu-ray release of this anthology, for you fellow Blu-ray collectors. I doubt studios may remaster these in 4K but I'm sure fans recommended that it'd be done.
An impressive anthology collection well put together! Grab your copy now! I'll wrap this review with these quotes:
"Think about the future!"
— Jack Napier (The Joker)
"Life's a bitch, and so am I."
— Selina Kyle (Catwoman)
"Riddle Me This, Fred: What is everything to someone, and nothing to everyone else?"
— Ed Nygma (Riddler)
"I see without seeing. To me, darkness is as clear as daylight. What am I?"
— Bruce Wayne (Batman)
"One day Robin will fly again. I promise."
— Alfred Pennyworth
"This is why Superman works alone."
— Bruce Wayne (Batman)
"I'm Nature's arm--her spirit--her will. Hell, I am Mother Nature. And the time has come for plants to take back the world so rightfully ours, because it's not nice to fool around with Mother Nature."
— Pamela Isley (Poison Ivy)
"I hate when people talk during the movie."
— Victor Fries (Mr. Freeze)
"There's no defeat in death, Master Bruce. Victory comes in defending what we know is right while we still live."
— Alfred Pennyworth
(UPDATE June 22, 2020: Director Joel Schumacher passed away on June 22, 2020; He was 80. We're sorry for the loss and would like to thank him for all the contributions in American film history, namely in the Batman franchise, despite the mixed reviews. You will be missed, Mr. Schumacher, and thank you for everything you've shared, the talents you've showcased and the stories you've told.)
