Money Market Review (01/12/2026-01/16/2026)
One of the better, yet busiest, weeks this month, in contrast to the real-world happenings going on right now.

How was your week trading and investing? This week was good, despite some of things occurring in the news, though some layoffs have taken place. Tech sector is still doing well, and digital currencies like Bitcoin are seeing brighter light at the tunnel. Oh, and Paramount is at it again.

After not taking their deal, Paramount files to sue Warner Bros. Discovery; that didn't take long. Imagine taking legal action against a company that refused your offer, even if was larger than the others' bid. Anyway, some 10% workers are similarly upset as Paramount, being those employees were laid off by Meta in their Reality Labs division. Google struck a multi-year deal being the backbone for Apple—yes, Apple—and their AI features and Siri. Speaking of power, President Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on Iran's trade partners in contrast with the protests going on, currently.

Stocks ended lower on this day. While the layoffs happened Monday, Meta will be shifting from their Metaverse to AI devices—AI glasses, that is. Speaking of focus, Amazon tries to get suppliers for cuts ahead of tariff ruling by the Supreme Court. One thing that won't be ruled out is the trades for Gold, resulting in a steady closing, though Silver sat around $89. Lastly, the Pentagon is putting down $1B in L3Harris' rocket motor business. Not sure why, but I feel that there's something about this investment begging for eyes to be drawn in; in other words, we'll see what the Pentagon plans to do with this.

On this day, Bitcoin was slowly itching toward $100,000; Gold and Silver continue to rally as well. Some of that money would come in handy for Oracle, as they get sued by bondholders having lost their investments on AI. What happened, Oracle? This is something OpenAI ought to be careful, having spent and bought $10B for AI startup Cerebas—for AI computation. Lastly, Netflix is preparing an all-cash offer to Warner Bros. Discovery, despite the legal issue Paramount has deployed on Monday. Looks like this purchasing of Warner Bros. will be going on for a good while.

Big day on Thursday, as Amazon is suing Saks who declared bankruptcy. In fact, Amazon's $475M investment in Saks "has become worthless." On the upside, Rio Tinto plans to supply copper to Amazon for their AI data centers, so that's good. The only spending that won't be "worthless" is for AI, given companies will spend upwards of $3T within the year 2027. May as well make AI your "best friend," despite companies like Microsoft not seeing much of a return on investment. Makes you wonder: does AI have a future now? Speaking of spending, Verizon acquires Frontier, though that's not the reason why the popular phone company experienced outages. It was a crazy Thursday.

Betting stocks fell on Friday, despite NFL prediction bets gained on gambling apps, according to Yahoo. Betting and prediction apps being popular tells me one thing: people are short on cash. Psychologically speaking, when people are broke, they tend to gravitate towards gambling to earn a quick buck—something to be mindful of. President Trump looks to implement tariffs on countries who are not in support of acquiring Greenland. State of California is asking xAI to stop producing deepfakes. We're going to see plenty of things being restricted in the realm of AI, though that will take time unless it's that bad. Lastly, we saw it back in October 2025, and it's in talks again: Congress is looking to avoid government shutdown trying to ease spending. Things are already picking up, which means stock news reports are going to be very busy in the next few weeks, going into February.
That was quite a busy week in the markets. From Meta's layoffs to Saks' declaration of bankruptcy, money is being made as it is drying up; this goes for both tech companies and citizens. There's plenty to be had in such purchases, but companies like Microsoft are critiqued with not seing enough of a return in their investment(s) on AI. If this keeps up in the next few years, not only will Microsoft, along with other companies, lose in the AI arms race, but they may simply bow out completely; either that, or they'll have a use for AI, but for extremely small things—like how software can automatically detect misspellings and stuff. Anyway, for those invested in companies that specialize in gambling and predictions, you may want to keep an eye if you haven't already. Because of citizens having trouble finding work, not earning enough wages of some sort, it seems they've been resorting to gambling and betting to earn quick cash—something psychologists discourage, yet here we are. How long will this betting mayhem, along with the money lost, will continue remains to be seen; worse, gambling addiction has already peaked, yet not one word has been talked about it.
What stock or happening caught your eye this week? Will Gold and Silver continue to overtake digital currency going into February? Also, how long until the Warner Bros. Discovery drama last? Let's talk all about these things on the comments section below!
