Teleportation: The Possibilities and its Outlook

General discussion of a technological advancement that may or may not seek the chances of consideration anytime soon.

From virtual reality to artificial intelligence (AI), technology is the way of life. Nevermind the topsy-turvy tech market with respect to job stability, the only way to get through life is to have some piece of tech that will help get you by from smartphones to internet. If some of these technological breakthroughs have seen the light of day, and enjoying the sunlight nonetheless, there's one that barely gets talked about that I wonder will ever be considered: teleportation. You don't have to be a fan of science fiction in knowing about this hypothetical phenomenon, where a living being or an inanimate object can relocate effortlessly, by the sudden act of disappearing and reappearing, from one place to another. Sure, this all sounds like something from a quantum physics book, and it is, but in a physical world like where we're in right now, is such thing even possible? Let me put it this way: Will it benefit the people? Do we, as citizens of this beautiful world, want/need it? As you know, something can't be considered if there isn't a demand of it (something that can discussed about the things we have today).

For the sake of conversation, let's pretend that this breakthrough will make its global debut in 2026. Cool, so with this technological advancement, there'll be another tech making its way into our everyday lives. We shall dive in and see what to expect, what the challenges may be and the changes taking place. (Those reading this right now are welcome to join in this "thoughts on paper" entry on this blog post as I'm curious to know as well.)

Atoms in, Atoms out

"In 1,000 years time, [teleportation] might actually be a possibility, scientists believe1," said and reported by news.com.au via their Technology column. One of the challenges to making this happen will be the amount of energy required to power this up, and given the human population currently, there'll be plenty of "transactions" to process just to hit the ground running. While there were breakthroughs of quantum information being teleported from one place to another makes teleportation a huge possibility. According to Frank Holmes, a CEO/CIO of US Global Investors, and contributor of Forbes, he said

"Companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Google are racing to build out data centers capable of handling this incredible demand, and they need a lot of energy to do it. By one estimate, data centers could consume up to 9% of the United States’ electricity by 2030, more than double what they’re using today. That’s a staggering amount of power, and it raises serious questions about how we’re going to meet that demand in a way that’s both reliable and sustainable."— Frank Holmes, Why Tech Giants Are Betting Big On Nuclear Power2 (2024)

That percentage may not be in the double digits, yet, but that's a lot of energy consumption; That's not including the mundane activities and hobbies related with computer and internet usage. All this makes you wonder how much more energy is needed for us humans to teleport, let alone supplementing the electricity to maintain things we already have running. This can only be possible and planned ahead of time in accordance with laws and regulations in place, if and only if there's a need for teleportation. Something like this has to be discussed in the open as many people didn't think AI was ever needed until it optimized duties and tasks for some; For others, it presented quick responses and the sharing of information within a few seconds while the rest of us saw some jobs getting replaced very quickly. Since this 2025 started, there have been a handful of tragedies in relation to air travel (our hearts go out to the victims), and because we can't rush and say it's a sign that teleportation would be the safer method, again, this kind of technology needs further discussion before making plans for it. This goes back to my question: Is this the "itch" we gradually may scratch toward a future that needs it?

Teleportation Station: Coming to a town near you!

We can start by saying that we ourselves are made of atoms. In order to teleport in this physical, relative world, we'd have to "grind" an organism or an object to be safe into tiny atoms or smaller, then transport those atoms in another plane within this world. Right away, to have an innocent human being shrunk into atoms then rebuild them back into their original form presents some scary and life-threatening possibilities if not careful. Heck, this rebuilding of the person may not be fully complete nor will they look in the same way they did prior to teleporting. That brings one of the first questions for physicists and mathematicians: Is it possible to explain or compose a theory that is able to break down a living being into atom-sized molecules, transport safely, then rebuild them back as they were a minute ago? Can it be done without a physical "glitch" that may be present in the possibility this living being may not end up as their original form after the teleportation is complete?

Teleportation will not only concern the actual transporting of us humans, but it will also affect methods of travel. Regardless of how you feel about public transportation, ride share services or vehicles in general, it's time we check out what a world with little to no vehicles would be like, thanks to teleportation.

Cars and Planes: A Thing of the Past

With teleportation as our mainstay, automobiles, be it gas- or electric-powered, will just be another great invention that served our time. Despite enthusiasts in the world who'd still rather drive cars, even though there are talks about removing car ownership3, roads and highways will be the least-used public areas thanks to teleportation. This outlook can be compared to public parks in your area. Think about it: When was the last time you went to a park just to unwind? I'm afraid that if places like parks, or in this case side streets and freeways, don't get much use, then they will eventually be places for residence and/or businesses. It may be a fodder for up and coming entrepreneurs, but it'll also give the impression that roads are going to be structured in a way such that areas will look like outdoor shopping malls. This may impress environmentalists and those concerned about climate change though I feel that more will be in place the moment roads don't serve the public anymore. In addition, parking lots and structures will also be revamped into places of interest, and as mentioned earlier, either residential or business. All this sounds like big-time savings for us tax payers, however, for those who still want to drive or run public transits, what good will parking lots be if they're just sitting there unused or unclaimed?

On the same token, auto insurance companies will see a rapid decline in clients and overall business. That explains itself in a world where teleporting is the new normal, so what's there to insure if you don't have, own, rent nor drive a vehicle? Nevertheless, auto shops, auto repair shops, tire repair shops, especially those specializing in customizations like paint shops will be affected by this new method of travel/outing. All businesses related to automobiles will be affected greatly once citizens can teleport from one place to another seemlessly without any traffic, road rage, weather delays, or even filling up/recharging your vehicle.

As for air travel, airports will not have many customers traveling and may as well be converted to "teleport" stations (sorry for the bad pun). Garage parking, taxis and ride share services, even ones powered by AI, will not get much use. You're thinking, "Kris, if people can teleport themselves, what's the use of having something for the public?" Yes, us people can teleport ourselves though I would think that would mean making us into hypothetical beings with telekinetic powers that would allow us to do that (I've seen footage of rare people with such powers who can levitate without flexing a muscle). Since we're talking about us and what our bodies are capable of doing, this would mean setting up slew of teleporting pads in nearly every area for instant access, much like those "pay to ride" scooters or electric bikes available for the public to use.

Teleportation: Fun to talk about, unlikely to be a thing

The amount of energy needed to power up and maintain teleportation stations or pads will likely surpass that of AI. I highly doubt there's enough of such energy to go around, assuming the population continues to grow. Solar energy? It's possible, though I'd wonder how much land is needed to plant all those panels as places like the desert will be considered in deploying them. Add to that, making these teleportation stations more energy efficient will take another decade to research and figure out. It almost feels like re-inventing the wheel in a way, and even though it would make traveling much easier, it'll cause one of the biggest ripple effects in modern history from businesses to our way of living. Sure, we're comfortable with the lives we have now, but there may come a time where huge changes will take place. Then again, due to the mixed reactions with AI, I suppose there's a reason something as cool as teleportation won't be getting any traction soon...or ten years from now. Other than that, it's still fun to talk about and the possible transformation of things makes one think deeply. I also wonder about the possibility of getting a living being down to atom size and back again. Sounds dangerous, but if there's anyone out there that can find some way to get teleportation to occur safely, then that would mean this conversation ought to come up again. Either way, with technology coming faster than any breakthrough I have ever seen, it's only a matter of time. What do I think about teleportation? I think it's great and cool, but the physics of making it possible concerns me. The government will do what they do in laying laws and restrictions, but making this possible remains to be seen. Though in contrast, it's not something I want nor need assuming our lifestyle is comfortable (the life we're living right now). If something were to happen or be in place that changes or interrupts the way we travel, then it's an option to have and would like to see it in action. I only wanted to talk about it, and envisioning what it would be like (I thought AI wouldn't arrive until I'm in my old age, but at the time of this writing, I'm slowly approaching my 40s and it's here already.)
