There's plenty of reasons why physical media reigns supreme. All of us here on the network are full-time supporters, and advocates, of physical media. Here's an inexpensive accessory that many physical media lovers, namely those who read books, will enjoy and love. If you ever want to save your electricity bill from going up just for turning on a lamp just to read, you've come to the right place with this item: a book light panel.
What looks like a scraper for the kitchen, this handheld panel is easy to carry. Starting things off, unfortunately, the black handle feels cheap in quality. The light panel itself is plexiglass and is where the light rays are emitted via LED. Weighing at less than ¼ of a pound, with the light panel size measuring at about six by seven inches in length and width, this item is perfect for room(s) and/or areas that are too dim to read in. For power, this requires a stunning three (3) AAA batteries. Yes, we used the word "stunning" because it's about to be 2025, and while rechargeable batteries are almost considered, if a device uses loose, disposable batteries, at least require 1 or 2 of them—the same as a TV remote control does. The fact that this requires three batteries is too much. We don't know the exact battery life this light panel has, but when used in moderation, let's say about 1 hour of reading a day, this should last for more than 3 weeks minimum. Heck, even if you don't use this for reading books, you can use this on the go, trying to read something in the dark or in your car without having to use up your car battery. Anyway, the choice of power ought to be re-considered, and because it's portable, we see no reason why it can't be a rechargeable battery.
For light itself, it's bright white using 4.5 voltage. Depending on text size of the book you're reading, the plexiglass may make reading a bit blurry, in terms of focus. Besides that, it works great and regardless of how dim the surrounding light is, even outdoors during the night, you'll be able to get by with this panel and read just fine. Plus, it has an ON-OFF switch and can, on its own, act as a bookmark as well. No matter if the book you're reading is hardcover, paperback, or even ones with spiral binding, this works great. However, given the size of this light panel, this is quite small when reading "coffee table-sized" books.
There isn't an actual brand name for this product but is simply just labeled "Light Panel." As for the box design, it looks very nostalgic and retro. If you look at the images of this product above, the design looks like something from the nineties—reminds us of those mid-priced software you install on your Windows 98 or Windows XP, the ones you buy impulsively, install, use a few times then never use it again (we're guilty of that). The design also looks like additional software you buy and install for your printer. Nevertheless, the box's design is as retro as we've ever seen in this modern day.
This comes with the light panel itself without any instruction manual or any pamphlet thereof. We don't think a manual is necessary anyway, but as long as you prevent any misuse of this product, as long as you have three AAA batteries ready for use, you should be good to go.
Certainly not a bad product and costs less than $10. However, flimsy quality of the handle could be improved. Because sources of light are readily available, like the flashlight on smartphones, products like these may not fly off the shelves. Then again, news media infrequently spews out reports about electrical blackouts, so besides your smart devices and flashlights, it wouldn't hurt having another source of light. Also, as mentioned earlier, we believe you can get plenty of battery life using one or two disposable batteries; Three is a bit much.
In conclusion, while there are many things about this panel that can be improved, we're satisfied and still using ours today!
