"PlayStation 3 Play B3yond™"

May not be for resale, but it does exist for a re-visit.

This Blu-ray may not be for resale, but it's releases like these that make us curious as to what's in it after more than ten years. Calm down: It isn't anything explicit nor violent, but in this case, it's a full introduction to Sony's upcoming release of their brand new video gaming console: ...the PlayStation 3 (PS3)! Yeah, we're going back in time with this one, but it harkens back when things were okay—or so we thought—and following the success of their PlayStation 2 (PS2), it seemed Sony was on fire and this "up and coming" console surely didn't disappoint. Nevertheless, it's fun looking back at the trailers into how they marketed this console.

Upon clicking the "PLAY ALL" option, you're greeted with a music video "What You Need" by Galactic, with great camera work and special effects. I miss the days when videos were this simple, compared to today when nearly 95+% of the feature presentation is all digitized (unless, of course, it's originally produced as an animation). The two-minute video does a great job introducing the "new" PS3 and all its features. From storing your personal files to online features, it packed a wallop and was a big deal back then. One thing almost forgotten by most video gamers was the PlayStation® EYE—basically, a webcam for the console. Quite advanced for its time, but thanks to all that had happened in 2020, I'm sure that would've gotten more usage than it did back then. Still, it was a fun and nice addition for the PS3.

Other video clips explain some of the newest features that compliment the PS3, such as the PlayStation Store and the "new" PlayStation Portable (PSP). Here are screenshots we took during the PSP trailer as it took place in an area we're most familiar with:

PSP A World of Gaming
PSP Downtown LA buildings
PSP Guy and Girl walking down sidewalks of downtown LA

As someone who's currently a residing in Los Angeles, the downtown LA area featured here brings back memories. Granted, given the state's economic situation, those areas don't look as clean as it does in the trailer today. (If you are curious about making a visit, you may want to plan ahead given all the traffic you'll be stuck in, day in and day out. Heavy traffic is considered normal in downtown LA.)

Following that, you get video game trailers coming for the PS3. I'm sure you recall some of these titles: Gran Turismo 5, Pain, High Velocity Bowling, MLB 08 The Show, Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds, Little Big Planet, and The Incredible Hulk: The Video Game to name some. Since 2008 was also the year Google purchased YouTube, some of these were posted on the popular video-sharing website, if you didn't catch it on TV. Anyhow, the trailers themselves hold up well—nothing mystifying, nor falsifying, its content and overall product to consumers to sell and market the game. These trailers were fun and to the point.

Along the way, you get a little promotional video about Blu-ray and its high quality video and audio in comparison to DVD. These are the kinds of videos you'd see at electronic stores playing on the "newest" televisions, done to entice, and often fool, consumers into buying a brand new TV. "Blu-ray: Change the way you watch movies," as their slogan goes.

Coming up next is a total of fifteen (15) movie trailers. Perhaps you also recall some of these titles: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Enchanted, Prom Night, 21, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, just to name a few. Some you remember and enjoyed watching, while some were forgotten and never talked about again. Having mentioned those titles, we're sure producers and writers will run back to these and wonder if it's worh producing a prequel/sequel. Oh Hollywood...

Oh, and some of the movie trailers have 5.1 surround sound, so if you're playing this on a more-advanced sound system, you'll notice a huge difference in some of them. Majority of the video clips are in stereo.

Sony BMG Music Entertainment title screen

The last and final chapter of this Blu-ray is the Sony BMG Music presentation, showcasing music fans with a plethora of concert shows from famous artists available on Blu-ray. Naming a few artists mentioned on this disc are as follows: Shakira, Celine Dion, Chris Botti, John Legend and Justin Timberlake.

As mentioned earlier, this Blu-ray features both stereo and surround sound (trailers with surround sound, automatically play in stereo). The video commpression uses the BDMV (H.264) standard Blu-ray HD compression format. Video frame rates vary from 23.98 (24p) to 29.97 (30p).

Talk about an action-packed Blu-ray with so much trailers, and given that this wasn't for sale upon release, there's a lot to watch. Although we haven't checked, we're sure some of these trailers haven't been shown nor posted online ever again. That's what makes these exclusives so unique and we love checking them out, reviewing and sharing our thoughts on it.

If you were, or still are, a big PS3 fan, this Blu-ray will take you a nice trip down memory lane—reminding you how amazing the console was since release. This is also recommended for those who like to archive and/or recall older video game and movie trailers from the past. Whatever features we mentioned here fits your taste(s), this Blu-ray should be on your shelves.
