Night Hawk Salisbury Steak 'N Mashed Potatoes
Don't let the price fool you, as you're looking at a frozen meat product that's made with real beef; not that weird "sponge-y" stuff.
There has to be a TV dinner that's not only delicious, but made with real ingredients. Given the assumptions associated with TV dinners, not including price, we wanted to give this brand a try; seeing that even our local grocery store has seen little signs of purchase, being fully in stock. It was a great time to purchase and experiment.
Depending on your oven, which we recommend in comparison to microwave, after testing, we found that subtracting the suggested cooking time by 8 minutes gave best results. Since directions suggested cooking this for 18 minutes, our oven cooked it thoroughly in 10 minutes (cooked at the suggested 375°). Of course, after cooking, it will be hot to the touch, so handle carefully. Once cooled, go ahead and feast; you'll love the way this tastes.
Upon trying steak first, we weren't disappointed in the least. Of all frozen meals we've tried and eaten, this steak is the most real meat we've had. That must justify its price, which in our local grocery store, sells it at $3.49. That's expensive for a frozen meal, but we understand why: this steak is made with real ground meat, and not that mysterious "sponge-y" texture many of the "steaks" seem to be made of. This steak crumbles as it should, but still holds itself together as steaks should. We were very impressed, and the taste is great. Now about the mashed potatoes, however...
The mashed potatoes look like it's more "instant" than made from real potatoes. The quality looks fluffy, but even with the cheese and bacon flavors, it didn't taste much. It was unimpressive, and overall quality wasn't great. In our result, it looked something having the consistency of vanilla pudding.
This is an underrated brand, at least here in the west coast, of TV dinners we've seen and was happy with. Only catch were the mashed potatoes which would have been a compliment with the steak had it been real, but not to be. Either that, or adding that "instant" variant meant keeping its costs down. In fact, Night Hawk has other side dishes to go along with the main course, like corn, which we liked and would recommend better than these. Overall, we still love these great items from Night Hawk and will continue eating them.
