"Domo" (Volume 1) [2010]
Although shown during the early days of the internet, via memes, this cute monster is a huge hit to children.
This DVD marks as one of the very first DVDs I ever purchased on the same year Blu-ray was introduced while knocking out the HD-DVD format. No question that this adorable character, Domo, went viral during the days of MySpace. All that time I wondered who that character was until I actually bought the manga that went with the TV series. And yes, I got it:
Using stop animation, Domo goes about his business doing things like taking photos, eating, climbing trees, playing baseball and even ice skating. Each episode running at roughly 2 minutes long, we went ahead and summarized the episodes on this DVD volume:
• Camera
Domo enjoys the beauty and art of taking pictures...until Mr. Usaji found out that there was no film in the camera the entire time.
• Balloon
Domo grows sad not being able to reach a balloon he accidentally let go. Next day, Mr. Usaji blows the balloon back for Domo, but Domo releases it again thinking it's better off on its own.
• Headphone
While it's nice to hear the beautiful sounds of music, Domo learns you can listen to the beauty of nature without headphones.
• Domo Inc.
This one is nice: Domo and his friends pretend they're in a cubicle, making calls and working in an office. Tashanna sums up the idea of starting business nicely. We'll let you hear that for yourselves.
• Robot Dog
Robotic or not, Domo learns of the challenges of taking care of a dog but enjoys its company. The robot dog was devised and brought by Tashanna.
• Brother
Introduced on this episode are Brother Fox, Fox Boy and Esther. Domo learns about how siblings get along.
• Ice Skating
Sometimes, distractions can make you skilled at something. Domo unknowingly learns how to skate quickly, only to chase a school of fish swimming underneath the ice.
• Hungry
Hungry Bear makes an appearance, and tries to take Domo as his dinner, when Domo thought he was receiving free vanity (hot bath, food, etc).
• A Mysterious Tree
Under the rainy weather, Domo stays dry sitting by the tree which spontaneously provides food and some music. As the sun rises, Domo sits by the same tree, reading a book, but gets distracted by its kindness.
• A Big Tree
With the help of his friends, Domo uses all its efforts to climb to the top of the tree....only to find a tree bigger than the one he climbed.
• Two Domos
Tashanna and Mr. Usaji try to distinguish who the real Domo is, after Domo founds its twin.
• Secret Hide Out
Domo goes incognito enjoying and finding his secret hide out...until everyone in his neighborhood found out about it. This is the only episode in this volume where Domo let one rip.
• Rock 'n Roll
Domo and his buddies get together to rock out, despite annoying the birds in the trees.
The Bonus Features have a chunk of goodies to go with it. Besides the promotional clips from Dark Horse and TOKYOPOP, Domo Shorts are 1-minute clips from more episodes of Domo. Some clips didn't feature dialogue which was strange, but they are short clips not found on the episodes of this DVD.
Another bonus feature is Domo Animation Winners. These are the five, fan-made animations using the online web software that allow fans to create their own Domo animations. Some of these were nicely done, especially the one where Domo wanted to watch American Idol and Survivor. The animated short titled Domo's Big Girl Problem, where Domo gets dating advice from Hungry Bear, was quite funky. While it's an adolescently simple animation, it was brim with frequent misspellings. Not sure how that won, despite the short clip made by a user named "The Animation Master," but alright then.
While there is Domo TV, a series only aired in Japan, I couldn't find a second volume in companion with this. It's an oddity that also happened with Discovery Channel's docu-drama series Perfect Disaster which we reviewed here. Despite being a series in standard definition, being of high quality, it'll be nice to see a high definition revival of this series. (Okay, there actually is from their official YouTube channel "The Domo Nation" featuring various videos, but hasn't been updated in a year.)
A simple DVD release that likely needs more attention. Domo was one of the first icons that likely triggered trending, internet jokes—known as memes—making our online experience a little more entertaining. Nevertheless, it's a neat animated series that children and even adults will love. Don't be surprised if this series makes a comeback, given the selfishness of Hollywood, unwelcoming ideas and ignoring suggestions from fans (has anyone ever questioned how unfriendly yet unthankful Hollywood is to fans?). Thank goodness we have video websites brewing into the new entertainment standard such as YouTube and Netflix (to those who work for these companies currently reading this, and/or visiting our websites, keep up the excellent work!).
All I can say is I wish we could see Domo again, though thanks to this review, demand may grow and this DVD may be slightly hard to find. This is a great choice for DVD collectors and those who don't want to hog up their internet/data service. Great characters, nicely done animation and adorable episodes. Strongly recommended!

- Includes lovable characters, with their own comic book. action figures and plushies.
- Popular among kids.
- No remake nor any updates from both this series and their official YouTube channel since 2018.
