"The Theory of Everything" |screener|
First screener-version of a feature film to be reviewed here at KCUN, per SHOWSOTROS.

Dating back to Cambridge, England in 1963, already it's got the feel of a classic British storytelling. At a physicist's gathering, Stephen wanders and locks a stare on a girl across the room and awkwardly approaches and begins talking to her. "English," says Stephen; "French/Spanish," says Jane. That wasn't hard. Some people may already get thrown off by the movie's start as it leads them to think it's just another love story. However, socially inept geeks/nerds may beg to differ. Reminder: it's a biography film based on Jane Hawking's book Travelling To Infinity: My Life With Stephen Hawking.
Learning that Jane is pursuing a PhD in Medieval Poetry, inviting her to lunch with his parents, Stephen explains his atheistic stance to Jane at the table:
Stephen: "A physicist can't allow his calculations to be modeled by a belief in a supernatural Creator."
Jane: "Sound less of an argument against God than against physicists."
Doing things together that loving couples do, Stephen arrives to class in time, gradually feeling signs of weakness. He also went as far as to "geek out" with Jane explaining the likelihood of turning back the clock—spacetime. Jotting down the mathematical equations calculating such theory, Stephen struggles to write. He finds that his walking has gotten weaker as well causing Stephen to trip and fall! (If this happened at a high school/college campus here in America, all the jocks and "cool" people would mock and laugh at him, like every insecure group of people we've irritatingly grew up with.)
Doctors run diagnostics and test Stephen's strength only to find such tests were nil: He has ALS—Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis—also known as both "motor neuron disease" and "Lou Gehrig's disease." Disheartened, the average life expectancy is two years but the brain is unaffected, to which Stephen asked about. Jane, utterly worried, finds Stephen watching TV but wants her to go away. Jane stated that if Stephen doesn't play croquet with her, a date he first asked her on, she swears she'll never come back for him. Ever. Getting up to play a quick game, Stephen quickly walks over to his room and can't explain to Jane that he's got two years to do everything he can. Jane spills her feelings telling Stephen she really loves him, even if it means spending his last two years here on Earth. Without further ado, Stephen and Jane happily get married and show the birth of their first child.
Living the married life, Stephen's physicality continually decreases having to use two walking canes to navigate. He strugglingly strolls to class to acquire his results on his thesis—spacetime singularity. Success! Stephen obtains his PhD as his friends and Jane have a celebratory dinner in honor of Dr. Hawking. During dinner, Stephen struggles even lifting his spoon when eating. Stepping away from the room, Stephen tries his hardest to do something simple, like walking up the stairs, but to no avail. Stephen says hi to his son atop the stairs as his physical struggles worsen. Next afternoon, Jane brings out a wheelchair for Stephen to move around on as she looks at him with utter sympathy.
"This.....is........temporary."
— Stephen [to Jane]
In front of scholars and professors, Stephen, with his speech affected by his diagnosis, tries to explain his theory of black holes. After the speech, few professors storm off thinking Hawking's theories are bullshit. However, one lone Russian professor stands up only to praise and back Hawking's work and findings. Back to spending time with Jane and their kids, the couple arrive at Stephen's parent's house. During a quick lunch, Stephen chokes on his eating as his father says they'll need to consult a doctor, but Stephen refuses to consult any doctor at this point. Gathering her thoughts and realizing where she's at, Jane briefly argues with Stephen how they are "not a normal family." Worried about her, Jane's 'mum' suggests she joins a church choir—a very "English" thing she's ever said, Jane claims. Heading to church to see choir practice, the choir teacher, named Jonathan, immediately adds Jane to their group. Arriving home, Stephen finds a man in the house teaching their son Robert how to play the piano. During dinner, Jonathan asks about Stephen's theory of Time. Jane succinctly explains:
Jane: "Stephen is looking for a single theory that explains all the forces in the Universe. Therefore, God must die."
(later continues) "The two great pillars of physics are Quantum Theory—the laws that govern the very small particles, electrons and so on—and General Relativity—the laws that govern the very large planets and such. But Quantum and Relativity....they don't remotely play by the same rules. If the world were all potatoes, then easy: you could trace a precise beginning as Stephen once did--a moment of Creation. Hallelujah, God lives. If you incorporate peas into the menu, then it all goes a little....haywire. Just all becomes godless math. Einstein hated peas, Quantum Theory, he said, God doesn't play dice with the Universe. God is back on the endangered species list."
Stephen: "Physics is back in business!"
Damn....
As for Stephen, he tells Jonathan that Jane needs help raising the kids, allowing him to act as uncle to their children. It wasn't long when Jane broke the news that she's pregnant with their third child, but her mother asks who's baby was it, either Stephen's or Jonathan's. Then the inevitable happens: as Jonathan tries to back away from the drama, he spills he has feelings for Jane....and Jane has feelings for him too.
Traveling to Bordeaux, Stephen chokes and gets rushed to the hospital during a little audience screening; Jane warns Jonathan having received news about it. Turns out Stephen has pneumonia and is on life-support. Such symptom has disabled Stephen to ever speak again, as Jane tries to help by utilizing a color-coded alphabet using Stephen's blinks to decipher what's on his mind. Jane couldn't bare the trouble much longer but still is doing all she can. Next day, Jane introduces Stephen to Elaine—a caretaker helping with Stephen's communication due to his lack of speaking. Using the same color-coded board Jane used, Elaine finds Stephen wants a cup of tea.
However, it'd be too difficult to try and figure out Stephen's exchange through blinking, and thus a device was built onto his wheelchair enabling him to choose his words, strung together and electronically speak through a robotic voice with his choice of words. Jane says the voice is very "American" but that's the only voice they've got at the moment. After toying around with his "new voice," Elaine finds a magazine copy of PENTHOUSE where Stephen denies and says it's for a friend. Elaine doesn't believe it and cracks open the magazine for Stephen's personal pleasure.
Stephen: "So I said, I have long been looking for a model of the Universe. I finally found her."
Elaine: "I bet you did."
You saw that.
As Jane reads a brief excerpt from Stephen's new book A Brief History Of Time, Stephen electronically, but hesitantly, types out his next plan....until he has finally pressed the button for the machine to break the news to Jane: he says, "I have asked Elaine to travel with me to America. She will look after me." Dramatically, Jane is concerned but realizes that because he was only supposed to live within two years, Stephen has lived quite a long while and wasn't too bad during his physical disability. After she heard the news, she broke down emotionally and found her worst fear, originally found from Elaine telling her to step away for a minute before meeting with Stephen, has come true. Stephen hated to say but he too teared up.
"I have loved you. I did my best...."
— Jane
Say it ain't so, Jane, say it ain't so.
Packing Stephen's belongings, Jane soaks it all in (we've all had that feeling before). Showing up at the church she frequented, Jonathan finds her as they both run to each other....and happily kiss. Meanwhile, Stephen's book A Brief History Of Time becomes a big hit at bookstores, shows up before an audience and answers questions. He saw a girl's pen fall to the floor and envisions himself getting up and walking down the stage to the floor picking it up for her, all the while someone was asking him a question. When he broke the news to Jane through a letter in the mail, Jane congratulates him, and Stephen tells her to look at what they've made: their children happily run around, all grown up.
That must have been quite a life for Mr. Hawking. I do feel why some folks were turned off from the very beginning realizing it may just be another love story from the famous physicist himself. However, we learn of the struggles and efforts Jane placed down in order to take good care of Stephen, as some women likely wouldn't last that long in caring for their man's struggles (it depends, of course). Nevertheless, it was a great story, but some questions come to mind:
Had Jane took Stephen's words to heart in going/staying away from him after he found he has ALS, would he have ended up and stayed with Elaine down the line anyway? If Jane went away, as Stephen told her to, who would take care of him? Had Stephen's caretaker been male instead of female, would he stay married to Jane, despite her growing feelings for Jonathan? If Stephen was never diagnosed with ALS, would he and Jane have patched up with their religious differences? What would have become of Jane had she not taken her mum's advice in joining a church choir, where she met Jonathan? Near the end of the film, some facts have been stated:
"A Brief History of Time" has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Now 72 years old, Stephen has no plans to retire and continues to seek a theory of everything.
He declined the offer of a knighthood from the Queen.
Jane has her PHD in Medieval Spanish Poetry. She and Jonathan are happily married. Jane and Stephen remain friends and now have 3 grandchildren.
What about Elaine? According to articles, Stephen and Elaine quietly divorced. Yup.
Although I have raised some questions, I also wished that Stephen's accomplishments and theories were explained a little bit more. I understand that this film is rated PG-13 but what viewer has the brain cells to understand General Relativity and Mathematical Physics? What about Causality? Not very many. It's a heavy subject, and dumbing down for the audience may have taken perhaps another 10 to 20 minutes of the film, more or less, but a tad bit more on Stephen's theories and findings would have been nice. Other than that, Eddie Redmayne did a wonderful job as Stephen Hawking, as you can feel Stephen's physical struggles throughout the film. In an interview, Stephen Hawking said Eddie portrayed him very well and said, "at times, I thought he was me." As for Jane, Felicity Jones couldn't have been more superb in her role. She acted so well you too can feel her stress in caring for Stephen, let alone her love connection with him.
"And there should be no boundary to human endeavor. We are all different. How ever bad Life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. While there is Life, there is Hope."
— Stephen
I was unaware Stephen ever said this, and I believe this was the most inspiring message he's ever told. Young or old, this is great advice to everyone. No matter what you undergo, what struggles you're faced with, you can do something about it, namely for you and your happiness. Life is difficult but you don't have to make it that way. Again, this was beautifully said by Hawking.
As for the DVD itself, this is the screener version—"For Your Consideration," aimed for those in the industry. Thus when playing the DVD, you see these screens:
"Break it in half?" I don't think so. Also, during the movie, you see these burn-ins on the film as another reminder:
Perhaps the alcohol may make you forget so I'm guessing that's why they've placed those in the movie (twice).
Other than that, this is a beautifully-made film that I strongly recommend. You don't have to be a science major to know that despite your physical struggles, you can still do and enjoy what you love doing. Hats off to those who made this great movie and to Hawking himself.
