"The Social Network" (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [2010]
This review was posted during the time of Mark Zuckerberg's trial.
Mark Zuckerberg—a name known for allegedly creating a social platform ubiquitous among the digitally inclined better branded as "Facebook." This 2010 movie directed by David Fincher seemed to have had a briefly humble time during its release, given it's high praise printed on the front of the DVD amaray.
Anyone who has been using Facebook since 2005/2006 already knows its development up until today. Remember when it was strictly a platform for college students? My very first account was created back in 2007. I can't find the earliest screenshot, so this is what I have found as of now:
(Yeah, a lot has changed, and that includes myself, my friend circle and my perception of connecting with others. I jumped ship to Facebook because of how clunky MySpace got, trying to be a little more responsive via jQuery and JavaScript.)
When this movie came out, a lot of people felt that the Winklevoss Twins were just envious dudes wanting to take down the man who revolutionized friend connection. Because Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg has been in the news lately, due to their sharing of users' data and information to Cambridge Analytica, it was appropriate to watch and review this movie.
Whether you watched this or read the actual story behind the development of Facebook, there isn't anything new that hasn't been said already about this multi-billion dollar platform. However, given its rumors surfacing about personal data and information being privately sold to advertisers, possibly explaining why you see ads on places you've recently visited, items you've browsed/purchased from online stores, it all makes you wonder: Where are our information being kept? Who manages this information and what do they actually do with it? (For starters, try reading "The Numerati" by Stephen Baker, which The Seeds of Books reviewed.)
Hoping everyone watches this movie again, it should remind us who Zuckerberg really is and how he kicked some people to the curb. Triggered from a heated argument, eventually breaking up, with his girlfriend Erica at the time, it's tough to say that someone like Mark is a guy not many would want to be friends with. "Punk genius?" More like one of those geeks whose intelligence is so great, his ego protects him from getting beaten up by brainless jocks who think computers are devices to use social media on. In other words, I'd call Zuckerberg a "brilliant schmuck"—hacking and developing his website ideas using a Sony VAIO laptop.
As someone who, at one point, wanted to pursue information technology, you may have heard Zuckerberg say this in the movie:
"...so it's definitely necessary to break out Emacs and modify that Perl script."

Emacs is a free CMS—content management software, known as a "text editor"—software where many software/web developers use to write their code. It rivals its other text editor branded vi/vim, which is also popular among programmers. (There are online forums and YouTube videos where folks constantly debate which is the "best" editor out of the two.) How do I know this? I was a self-taught programmer back in 2009, and since many viewers aren't aware of the terminology, I'd thought I'd mention here.
Perl is a programming language, sometimes critiqued as "spaghetti" code, but also praised as very portable, secure and often the go-to when implementing system security. Zuckerberg not only exploited the loopholes and gaps in the database systems of many colleges, but he was able to break in with little effort snatching pictures to use for his social platform called "FaceMash." Interesting because Facebook uses the PHP programming language, as opposed to Perl, but its security is so strong, it's said to be up there with NATO's highly secure websites (Hacktivist group Anonymous were able to break into NATO's system at one point back in 2011, so in Facebook's case...).

Very much, the movie may be your average college drama and situations involving business with conflicting interests, but it does become a big deal knowing how these friendships are handled when a hot idea is ripe for the taking. Granted, this was before word began to spread about users' information being sold to third-party advertisers, but remember, Zuckerberg may not be the best man to collaborate and develop business ideas with, especially if you're the Winklevoss Twins. Then again, it could go either way and the Winklevoss gentlemen could've started the project before bringing Zuckerberg in.
If you remember the platform originally being branded "TheFacebook," it was Sean, played by Justin Timberlake, who suggested in removing the prefix "the" and just call it "Facebook," because "it's cleaner." Thus came the name we know today.
At the end of the movie, Zuckerberg very much does what a lot of us have done to justify a rekindling of a connection (won't spoil that part). Nowadays, it really means something, even though it's done on the website/app. We've succumbed to that kind of interaction: just the computer and ourselves, alone in an empty room. Crazy isn't it?
Anyone who owns the DVD may have seen the scene selection menu, shown above. Lots of movies have titles for specific scenes, but this is a first I've seen; Scenes are labeled numerically. Either adding a title may spoil the scene or they rushed this. Hard to tell, but this is something different since you don't see this as often. Oh, and no, there is no looped background music playing, allowing you to navigate through without distractions.
The movie itself is nothing short of amazing. I have nothing bad to say about anything that went on, and because this was based on a true story, at least in theory very much close to the real story, it keeps your attention throughout the entire film given how natural the actors portray the characters. Director David Fincher's philosophy is doing an excessive amount of takes until the actors sound like they're not acting. Anyone who has to complete a film project back in high school/college knows what I'm talking about. Because such an etiquette may agitate the actors on set for doing a million takes, I can see why he uses this technique. Doing so, gave this movie endless praise didn't it? Well I must say, that's A LOT of memory cards and hard drives invested to store all those takes.
The Special Features are where it's at, using organic background noises for the dialogue and insights on the actors themselves, how they feel about the story of this movie. You'll also learn the training that Armie Hammer underwent to perform the rowing scenes perfectly. Besides that, because this movie was very dialogue-driven, you'll see the many different takes, shots and why Harvard didn't care to help the production crew in terms of lighting.
