"Legend of the Crystals" based on Final Fantasy (Volume 2)
Second and final volume of this animated series, featuring a more action-packed plot.
Continuing off from volume one, this volume starting with "The Dragon Chapter" begins off with this:
While being imprisoned by the pirates on
Rouge Island, Pritz, Linaly, and Valkus
were stunned when the ghost of a boy
who had died 200 years earlier, while
fighting the evil Exodes, materialized from
within the crystal. The boy told them of
Deathgyunos and the importance of their
role in interrupting his plans to conquer
the universe.
Having already stolen the Crystals of Earth,
Water & Fire, the enemy attacked them on
Rouge Island to try to take the Crystal of
the Wind. With Pritz's effort, they barely
escaped the crises as they watched
Rouge Island sink into the ocean...
The crew arrive at the Royal Palace of Tycoon to meet with Queen Lenna. She informs them of a dragon from The Dragon Tower to help fly them to the Black Moon where Deathgyunos will launch his new operation(s) snatching away the Wind Crystal.
We also learn of Mid's grandfather, Cid, whose inventions helped the warriors fight in protecting the Crystals, though the battles became too tough to manage for them. It just so happened that Ra Devil (Deathgyunos) stole Cid's brain to dissect his mindset and his operatives to their advantages. Without question, Valkus orders the gang to fly and land on the Black Moon. While Linaly offers to fight, Prettz, Mid and eventually Rouge all tag along to The Dragon Tower to find and meet with the dragon. During their search, Linaly and Mid ride a chocobo—one of the most lovable characters in the franchise. After suddenly finding the dragon, Ra Devil confronts the gang and kidnaps Linaly after finding that she has the Wind Crystal, which she unknowingly received from Prettz. The Dragon Tower then collapses as the baby dragon evolves and grows into a larger Dragonite-sized creature getting the gang to fly out and save Linaly.
Onto the last chapter, last episode, of the series titled "The Star Chapter" for this volume. The battle is about to go down:
From a confession made by Mid, the
ghost who materialized from the crystal
of the wind, the true identity of the
enemy is revealed.
By request of Queen Lenna, Prettz,
Linaly, Rouge and Valkus travel to the
Black Moon to recover the Crystals of
Earth, Water and Fire from the enemy.
But just as they are about to begin their
journey, the enemy makes a surprise attack
and kidnaps Linaly, in whose body the
Crystal of the Wind temporarily resides.
Full steam ahead into the Black Moon ready for the big showdown against Deathgyunos. Not starting off well with the Dragon getting struck by lightning causing both of the gangs' ships to crash land. The gang all go full-speed on Deathgyunos as Prettz fights one of the robotic enemies holding Linaly hostage. Mid then gets a calling from his grandfather, via his brain, and goes kamikaze on Deathgyunos. The Wind Crystal then re-transfers from Linaly back to Prettz as he gets kidnapped for that, but then breaks free. While Deathgyunos targets Rouge, both Valkus and Prettz attack Deathgyunos constantly, and Linaly summons a chocobo to help them attack. The fight continues as the gang tries to hang on, but Deathgyunos, with one final chance gets killed by Prettz! Battle is over!
Mid comes back and saves his grandfather like he promised, reminding the gang with this:
"May you live a long, happy life. And when it's over, we'll meet again. I'll be waiting."

Both episodes end with credits.
I find this to be the better of the two. The series overall felt dragged out to compensate for four episodes, which meant that a video game story seemed like a rather short one as opposed to playing the entire thing (what shortens it is not having to spend time leveling your characters up before the next quest). I'm not saying the crew shouldn't have made this but they gave it all they got. I sure would like to see more of this, but if you've played the game, why would you want to see the anime variant of it? Others may ask the same thing, but I completely don't mind. Like I said, the animators gave it a shot.
Once again, this VHS was never re-mastered/re-released on DVD due to contract expirations/loss of distribution rights. If you can somehow get your hands on these two VHS volume set, keep them in a safe place because I feel we may never these back on the surface again.
All in all, it's an okay series. It could've been better but it's also not the best one based on Final Fantasy. Regardless, I'd take a look if you're a recent or a long-time fan of the Final Fantasy franchise.
- More action-packed than the firs volume of episodes.
- Excellent fight scenes.
- Great quote by Mid (see above).
- Very short series.
- Never remastered on DVD
