Charles Barkley. A big name back then, and still making headlines today. This is a man that needs no introduction especially for all NBA basketball fans. It is time we look back at this classic documentary looking more into the life and career of Barkley, despite the fact this tape was released in 1994.
Growing up in Tiny Leeds, Alabama as a quiet and shy kid, Barkley did everything he could to support both his mother and grandmother, and was a father figure to his younger brothers. His mother cleaned houses and his grandmother worked at a meat factory, and worked hard to make life easier for them. Barkley harnessed that mentality through basketball, so much so that he earned a scholarship to Auburn University.
"Do whatever it takes to make yourself successful."
— Charles Barkley
As his hard work gotten him more and more recognized, fans and the media began to take notice so much so that Barkley admitted that his personality changed because of it. However, known for his honest attitude, things backfired after Barkley had some friction with his college coach Sonny Smith. Coach Smith admitted that Barkley was lazy and needed to lose weight, when Barkley himself said he just wanted to be treated like a person, and not someone who was an outlier.
Though he had a great junior year, Barkley forgoed his senior year and opted for the NBA Draft, where he was picked up by the Philadelphia 76ers as the fifth pick in the 1984 NBA Draft. The rest, from here, is all history.
Barkley did all he could to bring his Sixers team in championship territory though he had to make changes with his game. It wasn't until the great Moses Malone who came in and helped train Barkley. Had it not been for that training by Malone, Barkley likely wouldn't have dominated like he did. However, for those wondering why Barkley didn't bring a championship to Philadelphia was not only the tough teams he had to face, but him calling out the general manager (GM) admitting his squad was terrible. Because Barkley wanted to win and win badly, the Sixers packaged him in a trade to Phoenix Suns. Even though winning a championship was on his mind, Barkley joined and played for the USA Olympics team, dubbed the Dream Team. That team was so good, Barkley had no doubts they'd win a gold medal, and even though it's not particularly a "championship," it's still something to be proud of having (I still consider it as one).
Back to the NBA, Barkley got well acquainted with his new team and fought so hard that they dominated well into the playoffs. One of the more classic playoff series was against the LA Lakers rallying a win and advancing to the second round after being down 0-2. However, Barkley said the best game of his life was none other than against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5, where his Suns trailed the entire game until Barkley stunned with 20 points in the fourth quarter. Awesome.
As the Suns entered into the finals, they met with Chicago Bulls whom Barkley lost against previously back when he was with Philadelphia. During one game, Phoenix fans were disappointed at Kevin Johnson and his lack of effort which costed Suns a game, to which Barkley came to the rescue saying this in response to the fans:
"The Phoenix fans were gettin' on Kevin tonight. If—Kevin Johnson—we wouldn't be here without him. If you're going to boo Kevin Johnson, or give him a hard time when he's strugglin', please don't come to the f-ckin' game cause we don't need you. If you're not going to be with us through the good times and the bad times, we don't want you here."
— Charles Barkley
Much respect; Good say backing your teammate up.
However, Suns fell to the Bulls on Game 6 despite being that it was a hard-fought Finals series, but Barkley was still proud of the work put in that got him this far. The film wraps up with credits.
Let's remind ourselves that this was released in 1994, the time before Barkley later joined Houston Rockets which was where he had great wins and matchups only to finally call it a career. As many of you know, he's now an analyst for the popular show Inside the NBA and has reigned with his commentary, critiques and work overall.
This VHS is a treat for all NBA and Barkley fans, looking back at his life and how he began his basketball career. He was never the man who talked the talk as Barkley put up numbers that were undeniable. Despite his struggle with weight loss, Barkley still knew how to play and even though, today, he's known for his blunt commentary, Barkley kept his word in remaining honest in whatever he says and does. He's one of a kind, a great player with an amazing career and a hilarious analyst. Hail Barkley!
Highly recommended!
