Tiny Troll Treasury: "The Sword and The Troll" by Betty Porter

Simple, but fun, book that's perfect as a starter for kids!

Books that inspire young kids are what we need. Not sure why there are books teaching them how they're born in the wrong body is permissible; books that help them strive, work hard, and succeed are better options. This one by Tiny Troll Treasury should do the trick: a story about taking over old wizard's position ruling the entire land of trolls. This story's plot should remind you of the classic The Sword and the Stone.

The story is simple and easy for kids to read (you can choose reading to them as well). While search for the next ruler is underway, various troll candidates try their shot in earning old wizard's position. However, the winning candidate couldn't have done it with help of other fellow troll citizens. Would that mean this winning candidate, including those who helped, are also rulers? That's debatable as this story never said, but it certainly seemed so. Thing is, that winning candidate was one who pulled the sword off, therefore, the position belongs to him. Still, for us adults reading and trying to analyze, it sort of makes you wonder: anyone involved in this sword pulling shall be ruler along with the one who pulled it. We seem to think so, but it's who pulls the sword, not one(s) who helped pull it. Just thought we'd say for the sake of conversation.

Besides overanalyzing the story, like we did, the writing is friendly and gentle. You can read this in one sitting; there's a tiny amount of suspense; and also, nothing bad nor depressing really happens throughout this story. As you noticed, there is a happy ending, but to who wins is something we'll let you, and the child(ren), find out for yourselves. Oh, and the illustrations are pleasant to look at. That's another thing kids will enjoy looking at, to envision the situation and story at hand.

We're not sure if this is a companion book to something else or what, but this is a book worth seeking. We recommend it for kids younger than 6 years. It's high time that parent(s)/guardian(s) encourage their kids to read early on. Remember this: we're currently living in a world where 54% of adults, here in the US, have a six-grade reading comprehension level.
