"The Story of Brer Rabbit and the Wonderful Tar Baby" collected by Joel Chandler Harris

A relief to read, review and recommend this classic book that's safe to read for kids!

It is titles like this that is a great example of books children will enjoy. Growing up and having read such books, here's one which we haven't read as kids, and originally released in 1990, you're looking at Brer Rabbit and The Wonderful Tar Baby!

The story centered around Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit, and referencing typical child behavior, they both would always try to joke and outdo each other. It wasn't until things escalated that Brer Fox decided to get back at Brer Rabbit involving Tar Baby. Just for those wanting to know, it's not an "actual" baby so please calm down; It's like people nowadays wait for something to be angry about, which is a manipulative tactic nowadays. Anyway, Brer Fox got Brer Rabbit well and good...until Brer Rabbit got Brer Fox back and in good fashion. That last comeback finished the entire story altogether.

This is one of those books who's meaning is simple: Kids should allow to be kids. The story is cute, fun and simple, while keeping it friendly and a little mysterious. The drawings and illustrations are neat, looking like something from an animated movie of the same title. Oddly enough, there's a DVD released of the same title found here. Other than that, this book is not only kid-friendly but they will enjoy both the artwork and the story. It's not trying to creep them out, mess with their minds or anything: It's a book that exemplifies the fun and joy of being a kid. While the way Brer Fox got back Brer Rabbit, it shouldn't frighten nor encourage kids in a bad way, as it's just plain fun. It's time we make children's books memorable, enjoyable and serve as a simple reminder that kids should be allowed to be themselves without nonentities coercing them to "be someone/something else."

The "sass" told from this book leads us to want more, even as adults reading and reviewing it. With some creatures featured at the beginning of the story, it would be nice to see some of those other characters come to light and have a story of their own. In other words, this story is capable of expanding featuring other of the friendly creatures shown and illustrated on here.

At 52 pages total, this is an easy read and is perfect for young kids, relatively those between first and fourth graders. Again, given all the nasty and controversial books out there aimed at children, this one is clean, fun, humorous and memorable for youngsters. Finally, a book that won't anger parent(s)/guardian(s), nor brainwash kids into lying about who they are and who should be.

Highly recommended!
